New homeowner checklist
- File your homestead exemption with your county appraisal district once the home is your primary residence: Collin, Denton, Dallas or Tarrant.
- Switch utilities into your name: electric, water, trash, gas and internet.
- Update your address with USPS, your bank, insurance and employer.
- Moved from out of state? Texas generally gives new residents 90 days to get a Texas driver's license and 30 days to register vehicles. Check the Texas DPS and TxDMV sites for the latest rules.
- Get a TxTag if you'll drive the tollways, so you pay toll-tag rates.
- Connect with your HOA for mailbox keys, pool and amenity access and community documents.
- New build? Put your 11-month builder warranty walkthrough on your calendar.
